Marafiki

Coffee

Coffee is one of Uganda’s largest exports, yet only 3-4% of coffee grown in Uganda is consumed in Uganda.

Marafiki Coffee is the answer to this problem; a line of Arabica coffee grown, processed, packaged in unique coffee bags and consumed in Uganda. Why does Uganda consume so little of its own coffee? Because we are busy drinking tea.

Most Ugandans

Uganda has always favored tea as a national hot beverage for reasons that are both cultural and practical. Tea has always been seen as a drink of relaxation and communion, as opposed to coffee which is associated with the rugged individualism of rushing and working hard. Tea is also perceived as easier to prepare, with coffee requiring many steps, from filters to french presses and large coffee machines.

A Cup of Change

This isn’t just coffee—it’s a movement. Behind every bean is the story of a woman who dared to dream beyond limits, who cultivated her strength alongside the earth. These are women who rise with the sun, nurturing their families and the crops that fuel our mornings.

By choosing this coffee, you’re supporting their journey to independence and empowerment. You’re investing in education for their children, leadership roles in their communities, and futures where their voices are heard. Together, we’re proving that change can grow in the soil and blossom in the lives of those who plant it.

This is more than a brew; it’s a bold step toward equality. Let every sip remind you that empowering one woman can uplift an entire community. We’re not just drinking coffee—we’re fueling possibility.

But these
are just excuses

Ugandans are extremely hard working people with most of working age taking on multiple streams of income, so the hustle and bustle that coffee is associated with in the West is not foreign to Ugandan life. When it comes to ease of preparation, tea can be just as inefficient when prepared without a tea bag; needing time to bring to the boil on a stove and sieve. With a tea bag, tea is still slower to brew than instant coffee.
