Our Story
Marafiki means friendship in Swahili and harkens back to coffee being a symbol of friendship and togetherness in Uganda’s pre-colonial past, eaten ceremonially and as a pastime. The Marafiki Coffee logo is a two coffee cups coming together in the shape of a single coffee bean. In all of our branding and marketing, Marafiki Coffee is to be positioned as the break from the hustle, something to share and a means of self care.

Vision
To become a trusted global partner in the coffee industry, known for connecting Ugandan coffee producers to the world, while enhancing the value of every bean through sustainable practices, quality control, and a seamless supply chain.

Marafiki Coffee
Marafiki will also be packaged in bags similar to tea bags for easy, convenient and familiar filtration. While using traditional coffee filters is easy once learnt, it is still a new practice.
Using tea bags to filter coffee is both recognisable and unique, grabbing attention, creating curiosity and eliminating the learning curve altogether.
Impact

We believe that a sustainable coffee industry is one where everyone has a voice. Marafiki Coffee proudly champions gender equality by working closely with women producers, ensuring they have equal access to resources, decision-making, and market opportunities. More women have been enrolled in farmer’s AMCOSes for a better representative workforce. We pioneer inclusivity across our supply chain, supporting diverse communities and providing a platform for all growers to thrive and contribute to the future of coffee.

In the face of climate change, we know that every step toward eco-friendly farming counts. Through our agronomists, we implement innovative, eco-conscious farming practices that help our producers mitigate environmental impact. Emphasis to organic soil management, investing in methods that reduce our carbon footprint is our top priority for the better future of our environment and coffee.

Sustainability is not just an ideal; it’s a commitment we live by. As we expand to international markets, we strongly emphasize our producers to fully adhere to the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) standards, ensuring our coffee is traceable and sustainably sourced. This strict compliance reassures our partners that Marafiki coffee is not only of the highest quality but also meets the standards required for a sustainable future. Our impact is woven into every aspect of our business, driving meaningful change and ensuring that our work benefits the people, places, and ecosystems behind every cup. We aim to build a coffee industry rooted in integrity, where each sip is a step toward a more inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant world.
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? We’ve got some responses for the frequently asked questions!
What types of coffee do you source?
We specialize in sourcing premium green coffee beans, including Arabica and Robusta varieties from the rich coffee-growing regions of Uganda. Our network includes smallholder farmers, cooperatives (AMCOS), and private estates, providing a range of flavor profiles and grades tailored to the needs of our buyers.
How do you ensure the quality of the coffee you supply?
We implement strict quality control measures at every stage of the process. Our dedicated quality controllers conduct preloading and loading inspections, sampling every bag to ensure consistency and adherence to buyer specifications. We store these samples for three months to address any potential claims or quality concerns.
How does Marafiki Coffee support farmers?
We mutually work with farmers, cooperatives, and private estates by providing market access, fair trade representation, and contract negotiation support. Additionally, we assist in adopting sustainable farming practices and obtaining eco-friendly certifications, which help improve both the quality and market value of their coffee.
What services do you provide to international buyers?
For international buyers, we offer a full range of services, including green coffee sourcing, contract negotiation, price risk management, quality control, preloading and loading inspections, logistics coordination, and export documentation. We ensure that the entire process, from sourcing to delivery, meets their specific requirements.
Is Pre-contracting possible before the coffee season?
Yes, pre-contracting is available before the coffee season begins. Most of our sellers prefer to contract at the start of the season, once they have a clear idea of how much coffee they will process. However, due to the volatility of coffee prices, many sellers opt to contract based on quantity and quality, leaving the final price open until closer to the actual sale. This flexibility allows both sellers and buyers to manage risks associated with price fluctuations."
Are samples available upon request?
Absolutely. We understand the importance of quality assurance for our buyers. We provide coffee samples upon request, allowing buyers to assess the quality, flavor, and profile of the coffee before committing to a purchase.
What are the terms of payment to most of your sellers?
85% of our sellers prefer FOT (Free on Truck) payment terms. This means that the coffee is delivered to the buyer’s designated carrier, and the seller covers all costs until the coffee is loaded onto the truck. After that, the buyer assumes responsibility. However, we ensure that the payment terms are always discussed and agreed upon, providing flexibility for both parties to come to a fair agreement.
